Stories of Place is an anthology of 18 short stories from 9 writers spread across 3 continents and 12 time zones. How did that come about? Niamh McAnally founded this international writer’s group in 2020 and has been hosting zoom meetings with them every month for the past five years. In 2023, she organized a writer’s retreat for everyone to meet in person in the UK where they conceived the idea for this collaboration of work. It is a celebration of everyone’s writing style and contains a myriad of engaging stories. From the bustling streets of Tokyo and the rugged landscapes of the Australian bush to the Mexican-American border and the Dublin suburbs of Ireland, it offers a unique perspective on a variety of stories; teenage passion, familial love, the cruelty of war, and the quiet tragedies of later life. There is something for everyone. The eclectic styles are tied together the what3words app, which assigns three unique words to identify a precise location on Earth.
Event organizer Chris Sheldrick, who frequently struggled to get bands and their equipment to show up at the correct locations of concert venues, conceived the idea in the UK in 2013. Since then, its popularity has grown, with car companies using it for navigation, countries like Tonga, Mongolia, and Sint Maarten adopting it for postal services. Police and fire departments here in the US have been using it to pinpoint exact locations in emergencies, when every second counts. When you look up the three word subtitle of Stories of Place: zinc.level.blindfold you will find the exact square in England where the 9 writers were sitting when they came up with the title for the book. Each story in the book is titled with a three word address too.
