Spectacular Staghorns with Kathryn Preston

Come join us for a fun-filled, hands-on class where you will create your own staghorn fern masterpiece to take home!
The workshop covers the basics of staghorn ferns including; growing, mounting on a variety of materials, adding rare and interesting epiphytes, and ideas about incorporating staghorns into your landscape! The workshop lasts about 1.5 hrs. You will be given your choice of several staghorns (Platycerium bifurcatum) and your choice of plaques (wood, bamboo, tree branch, coconuts etc). We will then tour the Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Garden’s staghorn collection, where you will see what they look like fully grown. You will also be given your choice of a variety of rare and interesting epiphytes creatively adding accent and pizzaz to your work of art.
All materials, supplies, and plants are included in the $55 cost of the class. Your take-home staghorn creation will have a value of $40+
Bio of instructor!
Kathryn Preston is a botanist and former horticulturist/curator of the Fern, cycad, and economic plant collections at the United States Botanic Garden Conservatory in Washington DC. Her experience and love for staghorn ferns extends all the way back to the 1980s, when she was first introduced to the fascinating world of staghorns in Coconut Grove, Florida. Kathryn continues to share her knowledge and love for staghorns through her workshops. She also provides custom on-site additions of different varieties into both community and private landscapes.
