National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
The Punta Gorda Police Department is celebrating the second full week of April (April 10-16) as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. This week, sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and celebrated annually, honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world’s citizens.
The safety of our police officers and firefighters is dependent upon the quality and accuracy of information obtained from citizens who telephone the communications center. In Fiscal Year 2016, Telecommunicators of the Punta Gorda Police Department answered 33,420 administrative calls and 7,877 9-1-1
emergency calls for service. As the first and most critical contact our citizens have with emergency services, their quick handling of calls contributed to an average police response time of 5 minutes and 12 seconds for the year.
The telecommunicators of Punta Gorda exhibit compassion and understanding for all callers, and the City of Punta Gorda honors all of the men and women whose diligence and professionalism help to keep our City and citizens safe.
