Punta Gorda is one of the oldest incorporated municipalities in Florida and perhaps the location of one of the earliest human settlements in Southwest Florida. Initially founded by Issac Trabue, the town called Trabue was later incorporated in 1887 by a group of settlers including those who became members of the first City Council. They renamed the new city after the old Spanish name for the point on which it resides-Punta Gorda.
