Join us for a book launch for Mark Byrd’s memoir Fat Cat: A Fly-By-Night Pilot on Wednesday, October 5 at 6 pm. Refreshments will be provided.
The book tells the story of Mark’s unconventional career path, from flying contraband and overloaded cargo planes across borders to his rise in becoming the Chief of Aviation for one of the world’s largest corporate flight departments. It is a pilot’s story, a narrative with 30 profiles of airplanes – enough detail to interest professionals and plenty of human drama and humor for everyone.
Fat Cat, which became Mark’s call sign as a “contrabandista” pilot, was the nose art on one of the planes flown by his father, who was a pilot in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The cover of the book was painted by his mother, Mary Byrd, who was a founding member of the Visual Arts Center.
